Moonhack 2026

Code Club Australia’s global coding challenge runs in October, and this year it’s about online safety. We’re doing ours at the hall on Sunday 18 October, 10am to 3pm. Seven new projects, four ways to code them.

7 projects

Scratch, Python, micro:bit, AI

Instructions, starter files and code-along videos.

The global challenge window

We’re coding on Sunday 18 October. The rest of the window is there if anyone wants another go at home.

11th year

300,000 kids and counting

That’s how many have taken part since the first Moonhack in 2016.

This year’s theme: online safety
#

Every 2026 project teaches something about staying safe online: spotting a phishing link, working out which downloads are safe, deciding what shouldn’t go in a photo, building an encrypted handshake between two micro:bits.

How the day runs
#

  1. 1

10am (30m): sign in and set up

Arrive at the hall, find a spot and get your laptop on the wifi.
  2. 2

10:30am (1h): follow along on the projector

We build one Scratch project together, step by step on the big screen. Everyone codes along at the same point, and questions get answered as a group so nobody is left behind.
  3. 3

    11:30am (30m): lunch

Break to eat. Bring your own, nut free please.
  4. 4

12pm (1h30m): buddy up and pick your own

Pair up and choose a second project from the seven below, then make it yours: new sprites, extra levels, a harder version your mate can’t finish. Judges reward projects that go past the original.
  5. 5

    1:30pm (15m): afternoon tea

Second break and a snack, then back for the last stretch.
  6. 6

    1:45pm (1h): keep building

More time on the buddy project, with help on hand if something will not budge.
  7. 7

2:45pm (15m): parent arrival and demos

Parents arrive at 2:45pm to see what everyone made. We pack up and leave at 3pm.

Bring with you
#

  • Scout uniform
  • Laptop or Chromebook and charger
  • Lunch and snacks, nut free please
  • Water bottle, hat and enclosed shoes

Worth doing beforehand: open a Scratch account and try a project from a past year. It makes the day much smoother.
